[He leans forward in his office chair.]

[He's joking.]

[There's a moment of dead air on the other line. He sounds a bit more serious.]

It is now. What do you need to tell me?

{Deep breath, Max.]

You're Batman, aren't you?

[He makes a... frustrated noise away from the phone. He hasn't even put on the costume yet, but he wonders about the Bruce that had come before him.]

[Well, this conversation just went deeper down the rabbit hole. Bruce is clearly frustrated, to use a word. Alternate versions, different histories-- maybe he can spin this, although he's not certain that she'll buy it.]

I don't know what stories you've read, Max, but I'm not Batman.

[A pause.]

Are you the only person who knows this, Max? You understand how something like this could be dangerous-- for the both of us.

I swear, I haven't told anyone. But... my girlfriend is from my world. She's probably heard of you.

[the_caped_crusader]

[Great. His problem just doubled, not to mention if this same thing is true for other people.]

And your girlfriend-- she's as discreet as you are?

[And won't, say, get super high and talk about how she knows Batman or anything.]

[That's putting it fucking mildly.]

I mean, she's great and all, but...

[Well, at least she's honest.]

Maybe you should think about having a conversation with her, then.

[The implication being so he doesn't have to.]

Yeah. I've been so busy with school and everything that I haven't really had a chance to speak to many people.

[Also, what is she even going to say?]

Whatever the reason is, I'm trusting you to take care of this.

[Although he's a bit more stern than he was before when he was playing the part of a yuppie billionaire, he still isn't angry at Max. In the end, she can't help the world she lives in any more than he can. Bruce still thinks she's a good kid, and if she didn't mean well then she wouldn't have had a reason to bring this information to him.]

Okay. I promise I won't let you down.

[It helps, of course, that he's giving her the same look the Doctor does when he's about to disapprove of something.]

[He takes a thoughtful pause.]
