Personality —

The foundation of Batman's personality is tragedy: he will never finish avenging the parents who died before his eyes. Before he witnessed their murder, Bruce had entered the concrete operational stage of his childhood, wherein he was gaining the reasoning skills that would let him use basic logic to think about events in the physical world. His fantasy of avenging his parents grows up with his logic. It likely becomes a frame of reference and focal point about which his mind practices each new reasoning skill, establishing the avenging mission in the very way his thoughts function. By the time he reaches the next stage of development, the mission already defines him like music defines a musical prodigy.

He is driven and haunted but his drive can't be labeled a mental illness for him any more than we can anyone else who fight against great odds to make the world a better place. Rather, young Bruce immediately understands the horror of his parents' murder and makes meaning of it. Dennis O'Neil was quoted:

"There is a big difference between obsession and psychosis. Batman knows who he is and knows what drives him and he chooses not to fight it. He permits his obsession to be the meaning of his life because he cannot think of anything better. He is possibly the only person in the world who could do what he is doing. But he is not for one second ignorant of why he is doing it and what is unhealthy about it, nor is he ever out of control."

As Batman, Bruce Wayne stands at the edge of an abyss. The dedication to what he makes himself during his formative years creates someone who is often times cold and distant, but who has great compassion and empathy for the world around him. He's smug, he's sly, and he's intimidating enough that he can step into a room full of people with superhuman abilities, and yet they're the ones who fear him. He is wealthy beyond measure, but denies himself those luxuries in pursuit of his goal. His personal life is lonely and unfulfilling, despite surrounding himself with people who find value in his existence. He knows this, is often times at odds with himself over this, but knows deep down that his hatred of the same people that killed his parents makes the world a better place. In his mind, his pain and isolation pale in comparison to the destruction that would occur if he chooses not to stop his enemies' plans. Without the incredible control he exerts over his hatred, Bruce can't be responsible for it. Therein lies his moral standard, and why Batman ultimately chooses not to kill.

In the end, Bruce is complex. Over more than seventy years of publication, there have been debates both in and outside of the meta that question whether or not Batman is psychotic, homicidal, suicidal, or even suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder. The answer is that none of these are clinically viable, nor are they accurate. Batman, for better or worse, is in complete control of all of his mental and physical faculties in respect of the world in which he lives. As Bruce himself once said, he may not be happy, but he is content.

Gameplay —

Areas of Interest / Brainstorming: Bruce's main objective will be getting home, naturally, because this isn't his Earth to protect. This, of course, isn't to say that he won't instantly involve himself in helping the people here and just fully getting as far up in everyone's asshole that he has to in order to fix a problem. While maybe standoffish at first, I've always believed that Bruce has, likely subconsciously, always sought out people, as he copes with his own loneliness. When he does that, gets to know these people, it won't take long for him to care about them. Building those sort of long term, slow burn relationships are what I'm looking forward to the most.

Physical Differences: He looks the same physically, though all of his previous body scars would be healed. Transformed, he may look something more akin to this
AU History: I like to imagine Bruce's human canon went pretty much the same as his normal comic canon, as vampires are not unheard of in DC. Whether he was hunted or hunting is regardless, as is whether he was intentionally sought out to be turned or not, but regardless, his time as an actual vampire would have likely continued the same as his human self. As I mention below, without the memories of his parents death, he'll feel these gaps distinctly: why did all of this feel so natural from day one? Why is he so averse to the act of taking the lives of humans? Bruce is a detective at heart, so I think secretly he'll have spent years trying to find more about his past, especially with the advent of their dreams, but perhaps will have come no closer. Maybe there's something missing. A few key memories. But along with being a detective, he was always a teacher, too. Gravitating towards the students would come naturally to him like his adopting of his Robins, and I think for a very long time he would be okay with that, if not... satisfied. As if he were lacking purpose. I think the dreams probably get worse, especially as students begin to die, similarly to how he 'breaks down' when one of his Robin's die. How long can he go without true purpose, just following orders? How long until the deaths of novice students are one too many? I think his anger after discovering the truth, if that does indeed happen, will be an interesting development, especially since I'm saying that he's essentially been a vampire longer than he'd been Batman at this point.
AU Personality: There are a lot of similarities between Bruce's canon and being an actual vampire, as you might imagine, so I think his perception of his past and who he is now would almost seem like a natural progression. But that's weird, right? Because you're not out there acting like a vampire before being a vampire, are you? Unless you're real goth about life (he is). Still, without core memories, namely the death of his parents, he probably feels a loss. Like he's living within this world with all of this power of a vampire and this encyclopedia of knowledge and skill as Batman, he feels like he has little actual purpose. The students, like his Robins, become his focus then. If we're to follow the logic of a normal Batman, he sees these students akin to himself, entering a world they don't understand and that he can't dissuade them from entering, that he might as well train them to survive, even though his methods may be harsh and often taciturn. I also think, given his nature for detective work, that he would be very curious about his past. Who was he? Why does he feel this way? What are these dreams? Especially these dreams of blood and shadow and bats and... pearls? Were they always pearls? After 42 years as a vampire, maybe they more resemble incisors now. Weren't they pearls? He can't remember... but once he does, he'll be very upset.

Course Information

Court: Come on! Black court! He's an emo, broody goth rich boy who likes to sneak in the shadows and plan and hunt his prey. In the TDM, I suggested he started in other courts, like the Silver Court, given his extensive knowledge in the sciences. He likely has ties to many houses, but in the end, he's Batman. The secrecy of the Black Court is a natural fit.
Subjects of Interest: He can teach anything, really. The silent walking and stalking of a ninja would be profound to learn as a vampire. The anatomy of pain, of the human body, of nerves and muscles, can all translate naturally. Does he know weak points? Well, now he can see the blood flowing through the body of a human or vampire. He can teach tracking, how to follow clues to discover more about prey, or how to safely navigate cities in order to stay out of sight. He's fuckin' Batman.
Maker/Blood Claim: No pre-established maker. I like to imagine that he was able to kill his sire during the initial turning. This sort of thing was already really written because #comics lol. He can go toe-to-toe with Dracula himself, and managed to kill him, though he did end up turning into a vampire himself in the end. I'd like to think that sort of thing would be of note to the court.

HOW'S MY DRIVING?

Do you enjoy or dislike the way that I play Batman? Then this post is for you! Batman is an exceptionally difficult character to play, and I am always looking for ways to improve my experience with him, and the experience of others playing with him.
